Free State Agriculture (FSA) would once again like to warn farmers to be extremely vigilant as the festive season approaches, with two farm attacks that took place in the province over the weekend, one that was prevented and municipal officials who were arrested for stock theft.

According to the VKB/FSA Safety Desk’s information, farmers caught two municipal officials from the Phumelela Municipality who allegedly stole 35 sheep on Sunday, 27 November 2016.  Farmers on their way home after church saw the bakkie on the road transporting 10 sheep on the back of the bakkie without having any bars as the Law stipulates. Ben Greyling, safety coordinator, says the local safety network was alerted and farmers blocked the road and pulled over the vehicle, after which the Police were contacted. Five sheep were also found in a local township. The animals already had new tattoos on the inside of their ears. The stock thieves apparently deliver most of their bait to QwaQwa.

Heavy rain over the northern parts of the Free State

Many farmers are busy with clean-up operations today after heavy rain and hail occurred sporadically over the northern parts of the Free State Friday this weekend. Rain measurements vary between 30mm and 200mm within four hours on Friday afternoon, 11 November 2016, over parts of Parys. Kobus Dannhauser, chairperson of the Parys Farmer’s Association, says could bursts occurred over some areas; “One farmer measured 30mm in four hours, another 100mm and a third reported 200mm in the same period.”  This rain followed on about 250mm over the area over three weeks.

“Despite the damage, we are extremely grateful! Our farm dams are full, the Vaal River is flowing strong and it warms our hearts to know that the Bloemhof dam can now fill-up to an extent,” says Dannhauser. About 80% of farmers in the district have already planted their summer season crops, and especially soya bean crops were badly damaged by hail. Many crop fields also recorded coil damage and roofs of houses and sheds were blown off or fell in on farming equipment.
