26 June 2014
Letter to the Free State
I would like to extend a very warm greeting to you all.
Since I started this portfolio just over a month ago, I have received the warmest welcome from the agriculture sector. Since the Deputy Minister, General Bheki Cele and I began in this portfolio, we’ve met some of the most dedicated and hardworking talented people.
During this year’s State of the Nation Address, President Jacob Zuma quoted the National Development Plan. The Plan says Agriculture, our sector, has the potential to create a million jobs by 2030. While this figure seems staggering, I am of the opinion that we can do it. By ‘we’, I mean myself, the leadership of the department of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, our stakeholders and yourselves the people who work, eat and breathe agriculture.
I urge you to work with us in developing this sector. There are many things that I have picked up from owning a herd of cattle, that I have had the chance to speak to other farmers about. I would like to exchange ideas and develop a culture of dialogue and working together for the prosperity of our sector.
The President’s call to us should be taken as a personal challenge to eliminate and eradicate poverty in our country. We can all play a role if we work collaboratively and decisively.
Mr Senzeni Zokwana, MP
Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries
