Farm attack prevented at Heilbron

A farm worker and farmers from the Heilbron region came to a shop owner’s rescue on Tuesday, 25 October 2016, to prevent a possible farm attack on the farm Vyandsvlei. According to information reported to the VKB/FSA Safety Desk the worker saw suspicious men near Kerry Moody’s house while he was on his way to work. He phoned Moody and warned him to not leave his house, after which he ran to the neighbour to raise the alarm.

The district’s safety structure was activated and farmers rushed to the farm. Three suspects were arrested, and two fled the scene. The suspects apparently watched the house for some time, and they also hid in the veldt to check the Moody’s movements.

Five farmers arrested the suspects and held them until Police arrived on the scene. Ropes and masking tape are some of the items found at the scene. This is the second time a possible attack was prevented on Vyandsvlei with the assistance of the local safety structure. During the previous incident in April this year, one suspect was arrested. This is the third attack on Moody. During the first attack, Moody was attacked, and suspects were arrested after the safety structure was activated. The attackers are still in jail.

Farmers who assisted during yesterday’s incident say they are grateful that they could prevent harm coming to Moody and his wife, or possible loss of life.

Tommie Esterhuyse, chairperson of Free State Agriculture’s Law and Order Committee, says this action is a clear message to criminals that farmers will work closely together with the Police within the framework of the Rural Safety Strategy to keep rural communities safe. “We want to prevent crimes and apprehend criminals to make our rural areas safer. We are very grateful for everyone’s cooperation during this incident, as well as for the farmers who reacted on the call for help.”

According to the desk’s statistics, this is the 15th farm attack that was prevented in the province thus far this year.
