Two suspects caught after farmer is shot in the head

In a second incident in the rural areas of the Free State the past 24 hours, a farmer was shot in the head during an apparent shop robbery this morning. Josef van Eeden, safety coordinator in the Fouriesburg area, says Pieter Swanepoel stopped at a shop along the road in the area while two men were allegedly robbing it at gun point. The lady working in the shop was held by the two men, but they shifted their target towards Swanepoel when he stopped at the shop.

According to information shared with the VKB/FSA Safety Desk the men emptied Swanepoel’s shirt and trouser pockets, after which they shot him behind the ear. The men fled in his 4x4 vehicle. The local safety network was activated, and the vehicle was followed.

The suspects rolled the vehicle, and fled into the mountains. Farmers, farm workers and Police worked together well to search through the mountainous terrain and found the suspects. They will appear in court within the next few days. Swanepoel is being treated in a local hospital, and he is fully conscious.  Free State Agriculture hopes that the suspects will be prosecuted by the full might of the law for their crimes. The organization wishes Swanepoel a speedy recovery.
